I Love You Phillip Morris (2009)

The I movie of the month is I Love You Phillip Morris starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor.

So this movie is amazing. It is based off of a book called I Love You Phillip Morris: A True Story of Life, Love, and Prison Breaks by Steve McVicker. The book is based on a true story of con man Steven Russell (Carrey) and his exploits of attempting to break out of jail to see his boyfriend, Phillip Morris (McGregor).


So this movie is amazing. It is an amazing love story. Especially because it is a great example that shows that gay partners are just as committed a straight couple (obviously but I'll just avoid that whole discussion and leave it at that).


Some parts were kind of tough to get through for me, mainly because gay love isn't that prominent in American films and I'm not exposed to it that often.


Jim Carrey does a fantastic job as Steven Russell. His normal style is present here and there but his serious acting comes through. Not quite like the Number 23 but still quite serious. Throughout the whole movie he shows us a very dynamic character that will do just about anything to have the lifestyle he wants with the man that he loves.


Ewan McGregor's character of Phillip Morris is the exact opposite of Russell as he is very soft-spoken and kind while knowing who he is. Ewan has played some roles like this before but this one is absolutely amazing. One would never guess that he was Obi-Wan Kenobi. He is calm, nice, happy, and very friendly.


Considering the plot is based on a real story, nothing can be said much about it. I do not know how accurate it is to Russell's life but the movie does a fantastic job explaining it.


I Love You Phillip Morris is filled with great humor and some heart-wrenching scenes that kept me captivated. I highly recommend this movie to see something very different and something very impressive.
