Haruhi is one of my absolute favorites for how much she doesn't care about what others think. She has her values, sticks to them, and tries to share them when she can.

She's one of the most down-to-earth characters I've ever seen which is amazingly refreshing. It's made even better by the company she is in.

Having a fairly apathetic main character who is actually an extremely nice person is one of the best things about Ouran High and Haruhi definitely sets the pacing for the show. It could have just been about the guys but Haruhi's presence is completely important. But not only do we get to see her help shape the guys, Haruhi doesn't stay a stagnant character either.
